Mat 2 update
MAT2 REFLECTIONS ON WEEK 3 AND PREVIEW OF WORK TO COME
In week 3 we did parametric differentiation. Applications are turning points and equations of tangents/normals. We could also just ask you to perform the fist and second derivative. Make sure you recognize products or chains in the parametric functions. We did some other applications of differentiation during week 4. You need to be able to optimize area, volume etc. Solving problems with velocity and acceleration should be mastered here. Maclaurin's series fits here and you should be able to expand the series of a given function.
We are also writing class test 3 during this week. After the test I will introduce integration starting with revision of the work done in Mat1.
In week 5 (on Monday) we will continue with integration. On Wednesday you will receive your marked assignments back as well as the marked class test 3 from a visiting lecturer. On Thursday you will continue with integration with a visiting lecturer. On Friday I am back and we will be in the Lab. Do not even think of staying away, the introduction of integration is crucially important and role call will be done every day.

Update for week 3-5
Mat 1 reflection on week 3 and previews on week 4 and 5
We concluded the hyperbolic functions last week. Remember that you must be able to draw their graphs, calculate values in your calculator and proof identities. We also started with matrices. This is a big topic and will count a lot in tests and exams. Your have to be able to operate (+, -, x) with matrices. You must be able to obtain the determinant of 2x2 and 3x3 matrices. You must be able to obtain the inverse of a 2x2 and 3x3 matrices. You must be able to solve unknowns using Cramer (determinants) or matrix inversion.
During week four we will conclude this topic, and write another class test. The test will include: logs, exponents, hyperbolic functions and matrices.
In week five I will return your test on Monday and discuss the memo and wrap up all the topics from basic math and matrices. I will also introduce mensuration on Monday.
On Wednesday a visiting lecturer will take mensuration further with you and on Thursday another visiting lecturer will discuss the memo of the assignment with you. On Friday I am back and we will then continue with mensuration. Do not even think to stay away from class. Role call will be done daily.

Week 2/3 Mat2
In week 2 we completed the numerical methods and wrote class test 2. We also did Gauss elimination and started with parametric differentiation. On Friday parametric functions were illustrated on Derive.
In week 3 we will do applications of parametric differentiation as well as applications of differentiation (velocity, acceleration and optimization).
Your assignments are due in this week, but feedback will be later (when all aother groups have handed in).
All your admin problems should now be sorted out. Focus 100% on your studies now.
Keep well

Week2/3 for Mat1
During week two we continued with basic math and completed wave theory. Remember that although the text book made use of degrees mostly, we will expect you to work in radians. Familiarize yourself with your own calculator and radians.
We then spent a lot of time on exponents and logs. This topic is so important that I want to urge you to realy practice this well. The assessment criteria that is applicable for this topic is: 13-18 on p10 of the study guide.
We also wrote class test 2 on Thursday and you received your results on Friday.
In week 3 we will complete the log and exponent theme by drawing their graphs. Then we will be doing hyperbolic functions. Assessment criteria 19-21. You have to be able to define the hyperbolic functions, solve problems involving them, proof identities and draw graphs.
Matrices will be done from Wednesday onwards and will run over in week 4. You assignments are due in this week, but feedback will be done later, when all other groups have handed in.
You should now be sorted out with all your admin and you should turn your focus on your studies.

Weekly update for Mat2
I realized I will not keep up daily feedback, I will now do weekly feedback and previews.
You got assignment 1 during last week and we wrote our first class test about Mat1 revision. We completed the revision as well as Newton Raphson, Simpson and trapezium rule. We were in the lab on Friday and Derive was introduced to be used in solving NewtonR.
During this week we will do Gauss elimination and then move on to differentiation of parametric functions. We will also write class test 2 on numerical methods on Thursday.
Study guides will be handed out on Wednesday and assignments will be submittedd on Friday (as negotiated).
Welcome to the followers, I feel much less alone out here. Remember to send me your email contact please!

Weekly update for Mat1
I relized that I woulsd not keep up to do daily posts, I will now go for weekly updates and previews.
During last week, you got assignment1 to do as a group assignment. We did the first 11 assessment criterias in the studyguide (p10). It is the first 4 groupings of page numbers from Singh. We also wrote our first surprise test.
During this week we are doing p213-220 and 224-240 in sing. It is the last of waves and exponents and logs. We will also write a class test on Thursday about the work done up to Monday (2 March).
I am still waiting for your emails.

Update Wednesday, 23h10
There has been some success with the negotiations and there will be a management meeting on Thursday to map the way forward. There will also be a meeting by the one striking union and busses with members will come from Soshanguve and Ga-Rankuwa. Studenst will be informed in the media (newspapers and radio AND on this blog) when to return to campus. I suspect (personal guess, not a fact) that it will be Monday.
Keep well. I am sharpening my pencils and charging calculator batteries....

Update Monday, 18h45
TUT Management briefs Ministry of Education
The Executive Management Committee (EMC) of Tshwane University of Technology briefed the Ministry of Education on developments related to the impasse at the University at a meeting held on Monday, 16 February.
However, the deadlock between the parties has not yet been resolved and activities at the University remain suspended. The University took the decision to close the institution last Tuesday, in view of security threats to non-striking staff, students, and institutional property. In arriving at the decision, management had consulted the Chairperson of Council and the Department of Education.
The other union at the University, Nutesa, reached an agreement with management on Monday, 9 February. Subsequently, Nutesa called off their strike after signing a memorandum of agreement with TUT management to enter into voluntary arbitration on unresolved issues.
Management has continuously reiterated their commitment to engage organised labour to resolve the deadlock and it is imperative that it is done as soon as possible.
TUT would like to apologise to all its stakeholders and students for any inconvenience the suspension of University activities may have caused. The suspension of University activities will not prejudice any stakeholder or student in any way.
The above information was taken verbatim from the TUT website.
I am not getting any comments from anybody. It's getting lonely out here.

Feedback on situation
It is a good idea to listen to the community radio stations. I get some of my info there. The campus is still closed and the situation turned violent yesterday when people got hurt by rubber bullets. It seems that there was even more problems on Soshanguve and GaRankuwa then in Pretoria. Please stert working on the assignment and do not worry!!!! We will make a plan to see you through the work.
Stay positive!!
Mat1: Go buy the text book. Engineering mathematics through applications by K Singh. Protea is cheapest, but Juta and Van Schaik also sells it. Work through the first 125 pages that will brush up your prior knowledge.
Mat2: Revise your differentiation and integration skills by using the supplementary notes from Mat1.
Do not idle around, then you will become depressed and lazy. I have already finished the exam paper (practice what I preach).
Leave comments here or mail me if you have questions.
